Art District Hagen // Culture & Art Osthaus Museum

The Osthaus Museum exists to show through its very special history and its current exhibition practice that passionate commitment to art and culture brings joy, creates quality of life and brings people together. Our museum offers dynamic experiences that shed light on the power and enduring meaning of art in today's global society.

In the Osthaus Museum Hagen, art becomes a pleasure and sensual pleasure becomes an experience. As a place of inspiration, sensual enjoyment and communicative discussion, the Osthaus Museum acts close to the public and is visitor-oriented.

We set ourselves the goal of getting people in South Westphalia, the Ruhr area and all over Germany interested and enthusiastic about the Osthaus Museum, our important collection of modern and contemporary art and our special exhibitions. The Osthaus Museum therefore offers a high quality of stay and conveys an awareness of art and the constitutive role of the viewer in an entertaining and lively way.

The house is dedicated to the life's work of the Hagen artist Emil Schumacher, one of the most important exponents of expressive painting in the second half of the 20th century. On three floors, the paintings, works on paper, ceramics and porcelain Emil Schumacher are shown in changing presentations. The museum's collection includes over 500 works from all of the artist's creative phases and goes back to a foundation made by his son, Ulrich Schumacher.

Hagen Impulse // Culture & Art The Hohenhof - The Museum of the Hagen Impulse

In 1906, Karl Ernst Osthaus commissioned the Belgian designer and architect Henry van de Velde to plan the family's new residence in Hohenhagen as a total work of art. In 1908 the Hohenhof, whose floor plan corresponds to the shape of a double hook, was ready for occupancy. Henri Matisse painted the tile triptych “Nymph and Satyr” for the winter garden; the stairwell glazing and the brightly colored stencil painting in the study were made by Johan Thorn-Prikker. Reliefs by Hermann Haller flank the main portal. In addition to the completely preserved interior of the representative rooms, which show a unique total work of art from the Art Nouveau period, an extensive exhibition of handicrafts by Henry van de Velde can be viewed.
